She has served as arbitrator and mediator for disputes spanning a breadth of industries and resolving billions in value.
While Sylvia Mayer has served as neutral in a wide variety of disputes, she frequently serves as mediator or arbitrator in disputes involving bankruptcy, business separations, complex commercial litigation, contracts, corporate governance, energy, fiduciary duties, healthcare, oil and gas, personal injury, and consumer issues.
What is Arbitration?
Arbitration is a confidential and cost-effective process to resolve a dispute. In an arbitration, the arbitrator or a panel of arbitrators hears the parties’ evidence and arguments and then renders a binding decision. Arbitration may be required by contract or agreed to by the parties.
Arbitration can be ad hoc (meaning arranged privately) or administered (meaning arranged through an administrator such as the American Arbitration Association, American Health Law Association, or the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution).
Sylvia Mayer has served as sole arbitrator, panel chair, and panelist in consumer and commercial arbitrations. She serves on several arbitration rosters, including for the American Arbitration Association, American Health Law Association, and International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
What is Mediation?
Mediation is a confidential and cost-effective process to resolve a dispute. In contrast to arbitration, where the arbitrator decides the outcome, in mediation, the mediator helps the parties negotiate a settlement to resolve their dispute. Mediation may be court-ordered or agreed to by the parties either before or after a lawsuit is filed.
Sylvia Mayer has helped parties settle in mediations ranging from half-day two-party mediations to complex multi-party and multi-day mediations. She has mediated disputes pre-litigation, early in the litigation, and following close of discovery. Sylvia Mayer has also represented parties in mediations. She serves on several mediation rosters mediating commercial, civil, consumer, and healthcare disputes, including rosters for the American Arbitration Association, American Health Law Association, and International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution.
